Gamjatang (감자탕) is one of the most famous soul food you can find in Korea. In the Korean language, "gamja" (감자) means potatoe and the word "tang" (탕) means soup. If you put the two words together it becomes potato soup. Now, looking at the dish it may not look like potato soup or stew, but it does have large chunks of potatoes inside. However, just by looking at it you would have never thought of calling it potato stew because the first thing you actually is is the mountain of pork bones (with meat still on it) in an orange red broth (made with gochujang and fermented soy bean paste) with a lot of red pepper flakes, young cabbage, perilla leaves and perilla seeds. The taste is salty and savory with a mild level of spiciness to the broth. The meat on the pork bones are usually fall of the bone soft and tender. Since all the ingredients including the pork bones and potatoes has been simmering in this hearty broth, it enhances the flavour of everything. This is a great and filling dish for the cold winters in Korea.
This restaurant I went to was recommend by a local person. The name of the shop is called Seomunnun Seongsu Gamjatang, all written in Hangul, which will be a little bit hard to find if you cannot read Korean. The shop had a fast food type of environment to it with office workers coming here after work for a quick meal. However, you will also find family and friends coming here to eat for a more leisure meal. Since the shop caters most to Koreans, there is not an English menu. However, there is nothing to worry since if you are going there alone, there is only one item on the menu for you so they will immediately bring you the traditional Korean side dishes and the gamjatang with a bowl of rice.
